Smile...Thats all!!!!

My horoscope today said “Smile, that’s all” and I wondered if it’s something “that’s all” type simple.Coincidentally few days ago over a cup of tea I was talking to a friend of mine and I mentioned to her that one of the first things that people would notice about her was her smile. Then she told me something interesting that she had actually done a study where she observed people travelling with her and found that almost everyone has this very serious expression on their faces all the time and people hardly smiled. I found this very interesting and for the next few days I saw that, yes people around me have a default non-smilie expression. Smiling is one of the simplest things to do but yet it’s one that most forgotten and most taken for granted activities. Yet its one the most beautiful things created. Just imagine that toothless grin of a little child. Doesn’t it fill you with an endearing feeling? The way your heart does a summersault when that special someone smiles at you. That’s the magic of smile.

Now I am not going to tell you why you should smile as by now you have heard and read about it a lot. But what I am going to tell you are reasons why you shouldn’t be smiling. Firstly, if you are source of income for those cosmetic manufacturers whose bread and butter is the wrinkle free cream on your face then you shouldn’t be smiling. Don’t believe me, alright then read on. When you smile you put just 4 facial muscles to work while during frowning or tensed or serious, you have 40 muscles active. This leads to wrinkle formation taking away the young fresh look for which you pay when you could simply smile your way through.

Secondly, if you tired of getting lot of attention from the opposite sex and want to avoid that, my advice is don’t smile as smiling makes us attractive. We are drawn to people who smile. There is an attraction factor. We want to know a smiling person and figure out what is so good. Frowns, scowls and grimaces all push people away but a smile draws them in.

Next, if you enjoy being sad and melancholy then again smiling aint your thing as it’s a handy tool to keep your mood. Next time you are feeling down, try putting on a smile. There's a good chance you mood will change for the better. Smiling can trick the body into helping you change your mood.

Here is something that smiling can get and you would definitely not want is “promotions”. Smiling makes you seem successful. Smiling people appear more confident, are more likely to be promoted, and more likely to be approached. Put on a smile at meetings and appointments and people will react to you differently.

And this is the final thing why I wouldn’t recommend smiling as it helps you to be negative. Try this test: Smile. Now try to think of something negative without losing the smile. It's hard. When we smile our body is sending the rest of us a message that "Life is Good!" Stay away from depression, stress and worry by smiling.

Friends, I am sure that if you are still reading this blog you are not one of those people who wants to look old and unattractive, doesn’t want to be successful nor wants to sad and negative. If your answer to all these questions is yes then now is the time when you should look up from screen and the first person that you see, give an eye contact and a warm smile and am sure that person will smile back as smiling is contagious which lightens the environment and brings happiness. So all I have to say is “Smile, that’s all”.

To TIP or not to TIP

As a kid every time I accompanied my dad to good old humble restaurants, I would linger behind a few seconds till he left the table, to quickly grab the coins that he would place in the sauf bowl (I thought he forgot the money & once when I reminded him, all he said was ‘that’s ok’, so I ensured his money was safe with me, you see). So this assured source of income for my piggy bank continued, till the day he caught me picking the coins (damn my timing!!).That’s when he introduced me to the concept of tipping, that we should leave behind some money for the waiters who served us. However, the last couple of years, our bills have seen a 5 to 12 per cent ‘service charge’ added to it, leaving us confused with the question ‘to tip or not to tip’. Some say its goes to the Government and some say it doesn’t. So here in my next blog, I decided to decode the mystery of the Service Charge for you. Your bill will predominantly contain VAT and service tax (which is applicable to restaurants ha...

Food for the Gods – Chappan Bhog and more

Eateratti this time is going to give you a peek-view into the food that was meant for Gods. For the first time in my life, I witnessed the scale of spiritual dimension of food up-close. As a part of the Deewali Festivities (one of the most important Hindu Festivals), Annakoot Utsav was celebrated with opulence by my in-laws. Annakoot literally means a mountain of food, where at least 56 different varieties or ‘chappan bhog’ is prepared and offer it to Lord Krishna. I had seen this, once at the Iskcon Temple, but this one was celebrated at home!! Finishing touches to the offering being added by Mom-in law The idea is to invite Lord Krishna or Thakurji in to our homes & offer him gratitude in the form of food, for everything that he has been blessing us with. Therefore, every single item that’s offered to Lord Krishna or Thakurji is hand-made at home for which, weeks of preparation was devotedly put in by my mom-in law, her sister-in law my Aunt Sonal Kaki and their mother –in law who...

Being @ Chennai

I have been meaning to write this blog for a while now but somehow got caught into a series of events. Anyways, about a month ago one of my roomies, Swati left for her hometown for good. Over dinner, a common friend of ours who has been struggling to get a transfer out of Chennai, congratulated her and jokingly said “Tere paap dhul gaye aur tu Chennai se ja rahi hai” meaning that your sins have got erased and so you are leaving Chennai. We all laughed at this statement, but I quietly wondered if Chennai is really that bad. I distinctly remember how scandalized my friends were I broke the news that I had got my posting in Chennai. Some of them actually told me that I was out of my mind that I agreed to go to Chennai. Most of their concerns were actually revolved around the fact that after living all my life in a city like Mumbai, it would be exceedingly unimaginable to stay in Chennai and suspected that the place and its culture would be harsh on me. Honestly, in a way it scared me a bi...
